In order for the Afghan economy to grow and establish a sustainable economic foundation for future employment and long-term stability, it requires robust private sector development —now. Private sector partnership with public institutions is a critical component of sustainable economic growth and only through its empowerment, facilitation and support can Afghanistan realize its true potential.
The Brussels Donors Conference on Afghanistan will take place on October 4-5, 2016. It will assess the Afghan National Unity Government’s commitment toward reforms, capacity development and governance progress in a host of areas but especially concerning its economy and private sector-led growth.
In the post-WTO accession economy, Afghan trade and foreign direct investment, especially supporting Afghan heavy infrastructure and major industries (e.g. agriculture, mining, natural resources, ICT, construction) have become mission critical areas for Afghanistan and U.S. Government cooperation and international financial institution engagement. Linking Afghanistan to regional markets in Central and South Asia is beginning to occur but enhanced support to these initiatives is required now.
These themes will be assessed and strategically linked to specific recommended actions by the Afghan Government in areas of trade and investment promotion and facilitation, improved private sector engagement, business regulatory relief and a host of possible industry promotion and market development incentives.
